MLK Day of Service – “A Ride to Remember”

2021
Recipient: Community
$1058
Grant

In January of 2021, we donated $1,000 to Lachat Farm toward the purchase of books as part of their Martin Luther King Day of Service. The book – A Ride to Remember – is a children’s book that tells co-author Sharon Langley’s personal story of being the first child of color to go on an amusement park ride at 11 months old in Maryland – the same day Martin Luther King gave his I Have a Dream speech in Washington, DC. The books were purchased from a Black bookseller in New Haven and were given to all families who participated in the Day of Service. Copies of the book were also given to every teacher at Hurlbutt and WIS to share with their students.
